Chahitsu at Lettuce Lake Park
Japanese Architecture | Professor Stanley Russel
USF SACD | Contemporary Tea House Project
Located on the Hillsborough River adjacent to Lettuce Lake Park, the tea house was meant to be a respite from everyday life. To achieve this the tea house is detached from the land, forcing the occupant away from their familiar milieu. A massive white wall is placed on the water, acting as a liminal object. On the other side there are two meditative spaces oriented towards vistas of the Hillsborough River and the park nearby. The actual Tea House was meant to be a secluded and private space where the concrete walls and bamboo provide enclosure for its occupants. Above a light structural roof give the inhabitants shade from the sun but exposes them to the elements.
